We want every CheapBills customer to know exactly what to expect from us — and what to watch out for from people pretending to be us.
SCAM ALERT NOTICE
Dear Customers,
We would like to alert you to an ongoing scam where individuals are fraudulently impersonating CheapBills and attempting to collect personal information. Below are the scams we are currently aware of.
01 Cold Call Impersonation Scam
Scammers are contacting customers via unsolicited phone calls, claiming to be from CheapBills.
Please note:
- CheapBills does not make cold calls, especially to numbers listed on the Do Not Call Register.
- This practice is also prohibited under Victorian consumer law.
- We are not affiliated with Alinta Energy or any third party conducting such calls.
02 Telemarketing Calls for Energy & Broadband Switching
We’re aware of scammers using the CheapBills name to cold-call households and businesses, offering to switch their electricity, gas, NBN or broadband provider on the spot. These calls often pressure customers into agreeing to a switch or handing over account and billing details during the call itself.
Please note:
- CheapBills never initiates a plan switch over an unsolicited phone call — you compare and choose a plan through our website or a call you make to us.
- We will never ask you to confirm a switch, read out a bill number, or provide payment details to an inbound caller claiming to be CheapBills.
- Genuine CheapBills staff will only call a number you have provided to us directly, in response to an enquiry you started — for example, after requesting a callback on our site.
- If a caller pressures you to decide immediately or says your energy or internet will be disconnected unless you act now, hang up — this pressure tactic is a scam warning sign, not something CheapBills does.
Not sure if a call was really us? Hang up and call us back directly on 1300 786 045 — never use a number the caller gives you.
03 "30% Bill Discount" Scam
Fraudsters are offering fake discounts on utility bills.
Please note:
- CheapBills does not pay bills on behalf of customers.
- We only assist customers in comparing plans from approved providers.
- Customers always pay their bills directly to their provider.
04 Fake Website Impersonation — smartsaving.com.au
We have identified a website, smartsaving.com.au, copying CheapBills’ website design, content, customer reviews and business address without our knowledge or authorisation.
Please note:
- smartsaving.com.au is not affiliated with, operated by, or endorsed by CheapBills in any way.
- This site is fraudulently using an ABN that does not belong to it, and is falsely displaying our business address as its own.
- It asks customers to pay bills using gift cards (Visa, Mastercard, Apple, Google Play, Amazon or Steam). CheapBills never asks customers to pay via gift cards or vouchers.
What Should You Do?
- Do not share personal or financial information
- Do not make any payments, including via gift cards or vouchers
- Do not click links in unsolicited messages
- Report the incident to us at info@cheapbills.com.au or 1300 786 045
- You can also report scams to Scamwatch and the Australian Cyber Security Centre
