NSW Electricity Market Background

NSW households have been able to choose their electricity retailer since 2002, with retail price deregulation introduced on 1 July 2014. Today, customers can choose between standing offers and competitive market offers, while the Default Market Offer (DMO) provides a regulated reference price for comparing eligible electricity plans.

How Does the NSW Electricity Market Work?

NSW introduced full retail contestability in 2002, allowing customers to choose their electricity retailer. Retail electricity prices were deregulated on 1 July 2014, increasing the role of competing market offers.

Since 1 July 2019, the AER’s DMO has provided a price cap for standing offers and a reference price for market offers. For 2026–27, the DMO applies across the Ausgrid, Endeavour and Essential pricing regions, with the actual comparison price varying by region and benchmark electricity usage.

Electricity Rates NSW: What Are You Actually Paying?

Your usage rate and daily supply charge are two of the most important numbers on your bill. However, your tariff, consumption and plan conditions can also change the final cost.

For 2026–27, the AER’s residential flat-rate DMO annual reference prices are:

NSW Pricing Region

Annual Usage

2026–27 DMO

Ausgrid

3,900 kWh

$1,899

Endeavour

4,900 kWh

$2,328

Essential

4,600 kWh

$2,604

These are reference prices, not estimates of what every household will pay. The AER’s 2026–27 determination took effect on 1 July 2026.

When comparing Electricity Rates NSW, check how a market offer compares with the relevant DMO reference price as well as its actual rates and conditions.

What Is the Default Market Offer in NSW?

The DMO gives NSW customers a benchmark for comparing electricity market offers. It is set annually by the Australian Energy Regulator and also caps standing-offer prices for eligible residential and small-business customers.

Retailers must show how eligible offers compare with the reference price, making it easier to see whether an advertised market offer sits above or below the applicable DMO.

Electricity Tariffs and Smart Meters NSW

Your tariff can make two plans with similar headline prices perform very differently.

A single rate tariff charges one usage rate regardless of when electricity is consumed. A Time of Use tariff NSW applies different peak, shoulder and off-peak rates. Controlled-load tariffs may separately price eligible appliances, while some customers may have demand charges.

Smart meters record usage in shorter intervals and can support time-of-use or demand pricing. Compare the tariff against when you actually use electricity before changing plans.

Compare Solar Electricity Plans NSW

Have rooftop solar? Don’t compare plans on the feed-in tariff alone. Look at what you receive for solar exports alongside what you pay when buying electricity from the grid.

When comparing Solar Electricity Plans NSW, check:

  • Solar feed-in tariff
  • Usage rate
  • Daily supply charge
  • Export conditions
  • Battery options
  • Estimated annual cost

A higher Solar Feed-in Tariff NSW can be attractive, but a higher grid usage or supply rate may offset some of that benefit.

NSW households considering solar can also check NSW Government solar information for guidance on rooftop solar, batteries and available programs.

Compare Business Electricity NSW

Business electricity should match when and how your business consumes power. Compare Business Electricity Plans NSW using your operating hours, annual usage, tariff and demand profile.

For 2026–27, the AER’s flat-rate small-business DMO reference prices, based on 10,000 kWh annual usage, are $4,523 for Ausgrid, $4,343 for Endeavour and $5,517 for Essential.

A business energy comparison should also consider supply charges, demand charges where applicable, contract terms and solar requirements.
