Origin Energy vs AGL – Solar, Green Energy & Carbon Offsetting

Origin Energy – Lower Carbon Options

GreenPower and Origin Go Zero

  • GreenPower is a government-accredited program. Adding it to an electricity plan means Origin matches the customer’s electricity use by sending an equivalent amount of renewable electricity into the grid. Customers can choose 25%, 50%, or 100% coverage.
  • GreenPower starts from as little as 65 cents a week. Origin sources renewable electricity from wind farms across South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales with a combined generation capacity of around 700 MW, and holds agreements to buy more than 680 MW of utility-scale solar energy.
  • Origin Go Zero is the carbon neutral add-on for natural gas customers. Origin buys carbon credits and applies them against the greenhouse gas emissions from the customer’s natural gas supply. Origin Go Zero Natural Gas is certified carbon neutral by Climate Active. It is a government-backed carbon neutral certification scheme.
  • Both GreenPower and Origin Go Zero can be added to an existing plan through My Account.

Virtual Power Plant (Origin Loop)

  • Origin Loop is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) that uses AI to coordinate thousands of connected home solar systems and batteries, making them work together like a single, large-scale power station.
  • Origin Loop connects to compatible smart systems including home solar batteries, EVs, and connected hot water systems. Over 100,000 customers have enrolled in shifting their energy usage habits through the program.
  • Customers earn $1 per kWh exported from their battery during Loop events, applied as bill credits. Activity is capped at 200 kWh per year. The standard feed-in tariff still applies to regular solar exports. There is no lock-in contract; customers can leave with notice.
  • A compatible solar battery and inverter system is required to access Origin Loop. Origin also runs community battery trials for customers who want the benefits of a battery without the purchase cost, subject to residential location.

Electric Vehicle Power

  • Origin EV Power Up lets customers set scheduled EV charging through the Origin app. A compatible EV and any Origin residential electricity plan are the only requirements.
  • EV Power Up charges at a reduced rate during periods of low grid demand, typically overnight or when solar generation on the grid is high.

Solar Panels and Feed-in Tariffs

  • Origin customers can get quotes on solar panels, batteries, heat pumps, EV chargers, and electric vehicles through the Origin website and app.
  • Solar exports earn a feed-in tariff credited to the electricity bill. The rate varies by state and plan. Customers in the Origin Loop VPP still receive their standard feed-in tariff for exports that occur outside of Loop events.

AGL – Lower Carbon Options

Carbon Offsetting and Carbon Neutral Plans

  • AGL’s Carbon Neutral add-on, certified by Climate Active, is available on electricity, gas, solar, and battery products. AGL calculates the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the customer’s consumption, then buys and retires carbon credits from projects in Australia and internationally to offset that amount.
  • Carbon Neutral can be added to an electricity plan for around $1 a week. It carries over automatically if a customer switches AGL plans, unless the customer opts out.
  • Carbon Neutral is already included in AGL’s residential solar and battery products.

Green Energy (GreenPower)

  • AGL offers GreenPower for business customers, sourcing up to 100% of electricity consumption from GreenPower-accredited renewable generators. Customers can choose a specific accredited generator subject to availability.
  • For residential customers, AGL offers a Green Energy add-on at 20% or 100% of total electricity consumption, with renewable electricity fed into the grid to match the chosen percentage.

Virtual Power Plant

  • AGL operates a VPP across New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, and South Australia. Customers with an eligible solar battery can bring their own battery to the VPP and earn bill credits. AGL draws a limited amount of stored energy from each participating battery during peak demand periods.
  • VPP event credits are calculated at $1 per kWh exported during an event. Customers also receive a quarterly credit for staying connected. Bring-your-own-battery participants can leave the VPP at any time without a penalty.
  • In 2025, AGL acquired South Australia’s Virtual Power Plant from Tesla, a network covering more than 7,000 Housing Trust homes fitted with solar and Powerwall battery systems.

Electric Vehicle Power

  • AGL’s Night Saver EV Plan offers a reduced charging rate between 12am and 6am for EV owners. Customers need a compatible EV and a digital meter to access the plan. No dedicated home EV charger is required.
  • AGL has also partnered with bp pulse, offering a 6c/kWh discount on EV charging at bp pulse locations for eligible residential customers who activate the offer through My Account or the AGL app.

Solar Panels and Feed-in Tariffs

  • AGL’s Solar Savers plan offers a feed-in tariff of 8c/kWh for the first 10 kWh exported each day, available to new and eligible customers in NSW and SA.
  • Customers on AGL’s Standard Retail Contract will receive no feed-in tariff from 1 July 2026. Customers on market contracts are unaffected by this change on the same date.
  • AGL’s Battery Rewards Plan pays an evening peak feed-in tariff for battery exports between 5pm and 9pm, separate from the VPP program.

Is AGL cheaper than Origin electricity in 2026?

Benchmark data shows AGL’s estimated annual electricity bill is lower than Origin’s for a typical household. The difference varies by state, tariff, and discount. Neither provider is cheaper in every situation. Compare plans at your specific address using a reputable comparison service rather than relying on national averages.

Is Origin Energy cheaper for gas than AGL energy and gas?

Neither provider is consistently cheaper for gas across all states. Origin supplies gas in NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, ACT, and WA. AGL covers NSW, VIC, SA, and WA. Rates differ by location, usage level, and available discounts. Compare current gas plans at your postcode to find the best deal for your household.

Should I switch from Origin or AGL to a smaller retailer?

Smaller retailers are not automatically cheaper. Independent data suggests the Big 3 average bills can be competitive against smaller brands. That said, providers such as Tango Energy, OVO Energy, Powershop, and Energy Locals sometimes offer sharper discounts or greener plans. Always compare plans at your address before switching.

Is it safe to use a comparison site instead of staying with Origin or AGL?

Reputable comparison services use standard market transfer processes, so electricity and gas supply continue without interruption when you switch. Australian consumer law provides a cooling-off period, meaning you can revert if a new plan underperforms. Ensure any comparison site you use discloses whether it earns commissions from retailers.

How often should I review my AGL or Origin plan?

Consumer advocates and regulators recommend reviewing your energy plan at least every 12 months, or immediately after receiving a price-rise notice or contract expiry. Major life changes, including installing solar, buying an EV, or working from home, can also shift which plan delivers the best value for your household.

Compare this plan against Origin’s other variable options, as the reference-price discount may differ between plans. Check current offers directly with Origin.

Is AGL available in the ACT?

No. AGL does not supply electricity or gas in the ACT. ACT residents can access plans through providers such as Origin Energy and ActewAGL. Use the government’s Energy Made Easy tool or a comparison site to find the most competitive plans available at your Canberra address.

What is Origin Spike?

Origin Spike is an energy-saving rewards program for residential customers with a smart meter. During nominated SpikeHours, you are asked to reduce electricity use for one hour.
