Why Compare Energy Plans in Tasmania?

A Tasmania Energy Comparison helps you understand how energy plans differ in price, tariff structure and contract conditions.

When you Compare Energy Plans Tasmania, consider:

  • Usage charges: What you pay for the electricity or gas you consume.
  • Supply charges: The fixed daily charge for keeping the property connected.
  • Tariffs: Check whether rates remain flat or vary by time of day.
  • Electricity discounts: Review eligibility and offer conditions.
  • Solar feed-in tariffs: Important for households exporting solar electricity.
  • Energy usage: Compare plans against how and when you actually use energy.

Tasmania introduced full retail electricity competition in 2014, although its market remains smaller than those in many mainland states.

Which Energy Providers Operate in Tasmania?

Aurora Energy is not the only electricity provider in Tasmania. The Office of the Tasmanian Economic Regulator lists multiple authorised retail entities in the Tasmanian electricity market.

Energy Providers Tasmania include:

  • 1st Energy
  • Aurora Energy
  • CovaU Energy
  • Electricity in a Box
  • Energy Locals
  • Localvolts
  • Momentum Energy
  • Nectr Energy
  • Solstice Energy

Can All Tasmanians Choose Their Electricity Provider?

Most mainland Tasmanian households can choose their electricity retailer, although available providers vary by location. Aurora Energy remains the regulated standing-offer retailer.

  • Bass Strait islands: Customers on King Island and Flinders Island have different retail arrangements. Momentum Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hydro Tasmania, provides their retail electricity services.
  • Electricity network: TasNetworks operates mainland Tasmania’s electricity network, regardless of which retailer a customer chooses.

How Is Tasmania's Energy Market Regulated?

Tasmania’s energy market operates under a mix of state and national regulation. Electricity and gas are regulated differently, with Tasmania also participating in the National Electricity Market (NEM).

  • State oversight: The Office of the Tasmanian Economic Regulator oversees electricity licensing, compliance and key regulatory requirements.
  • Electricity prices: The Regulator approves maximum standing-offer prices for small customers and sets the regulated solar feed-in tariff. Aurora Energy offers regulated standard contracts, while authorised energy retailers can offer market contracts.
  • Wholesale market: The Regulator also oversees certain wholesale electricity arrangements involving Hydro Tasmania and other market participants.
  • National market: Tasmania participates in the NEM, operated by the Australian Energy Market Operator.
  • Gas regulation: Tasmania’s gas industry operates primarily under state legislation, including the Gas Act 2000 and Gas Pipelines Act 2000, rather than having its transmission and distribution networks regulated as covered networks under the national framework.

How Do Electricity Prices and Tariffs Work?

Tasmania’s electricity pricing generally includes a daily supply charge and a usage charge. The tariff you choose determines whether you pay the same usage rate throughout the day or different rates based on when you use electricity.

  • Single-rate tariff: For 2026–27, the Office of the Tasmanian Economic Regulator sets residential Tariff 32 at 24.75c/kWh, with a daily supply charge of 182c.
  • Time-of-use tariff: Tariff 93 charges different rates depending on when electricity is used. In AEST, peak rates apply from 7am to 10am and 4pm to 9pm on weekdays, while off-peak rates apply outside these periods.
  • Solar feed-in tariff: For 2026–27, the regulated minimum solar feed-in tariff is 9.276c/kWh, which is 5.6% higher than in 2025–26, according to the Office of the Tasmanian Economic Regulator.

Tasmania has a highly renewable electricity mix. According to Australian Government’s Australian Energy Statistics, 97.5% of Tasmania’s electricity generation came from renewable sources in 2025, led by hydroelectricity at 71.8%, with wind and solar also contributing to the state’s electricity generation.
