How long does it take to switch energy retailers?
Once you have chosen your new provider and they have agreed for the switch to occur, it may take up to three months to complete the transfer, as it depends on where you are in your current billing cycle. An accurate meter reading must be taken so that one final bill can be issued, which will include any rebates you have owing to you with your current provider. This reading will also be used for your new provider. Your new energy provider will not start charging you until the switch is complete.

Do I need to change my poles or pipes?
No, not at all. At Cheapbills, we help you change the retailer or provider.
All the poles, wires, meters, meter reads, power outages and anything to do with getting the electricity supply to your home or business is looked after by a separate group called Distributors. They are determined by your property’s address and are not controlled by the retailer.
Energy retailers also do not generate the power. This is looked after by separate corporations that generate power through the burning of fossil fuels or in forms of renewable energy generators (such as wind or sun). You do not get to choose which generator your electricity comes from.
Is there a right time to switch energy providers?
Not really, but it is always worth comparing your current energy plan and provider to see if you can save money. However, moving home, an expiring contract or receiving a bill with a price increase can prompt you to switch.
Do I need to contact my current energy provider before I switch?
Once you have decided to switch energy providers, the first thing to do is check with your current provider if you will incur any fees or charges. This usually only happens if you’re tied to a contract. If this is the case, it may make more financial sense to wait until the term period is up to make your change.
What if I change my mind?
That’s okay. Your new provider will give you a ten day ‘cooling off’ period, during which you can cancel your agreement and go back to your old provider.

Will I pay a different amount at different times of day?
Possibly. The price you pay for your electricity will depend on what tariff you are on. There are three main tariff types and will usually be set by the energy company.
The Electricity Flat Rate gives you a flat rate, no matter what time of day you use the energy. Time of Use is where your energy is charged according to the time of day. Peak times will attract a bigger rate than off-peak. This tariff can also change according to the time of year. Finally, Controlled Load is linked directly to a specific appliance and has its own meter. This would be for an appliance that you use seasonally, such as a pool pump.Because they are mostly used during an off-peak time, the price is at a lower rate.
I have solar panels at my home, what sort of tariff will I be on?
That’s great that you have opted for renewable energy. Since it is possible that you will generate more energy than you use, this will be fed back onto the grid. As a result, and depending on which state you are in, this may be itemised on your bill as a credit. This is called a “feed in” tariff and must be applied for to the state.
Is there anything else I should know about the charges?
Yes, it is entirely possible that you may be on different rates depending on your usage or what appliances you have. This will be clearly stated on your bill. If you have any questions, you should contact your energy supplier.

5. You will receive a Welcome Pack which will include your new Contract, Terms & Conditions, details of your new plan, a Disclosure Statement, Bank Mandate and a Concession Form for residential customers to complete if they are entitled to it.
