How Quickly Can Your Electricity and Gas be Connected?

It seems that these days we want things quickly at the flick of a switch. When it comes to getting your electricity and gas connected you can’t get it connected at the flick of a switch at least not currently but thankfully it’s still pretty quick.

Below we show you how to get it connected and we also look at possible delays that can occur.

Connecting Electricity

When it comes to connecting your electricity it’s quite straightforward as all you need to do is to contact your energy provider either by phone or online and tell them you need your electricity connected. However you must keep in mind the following:

  • If moving home please tell your energy provider as soon as possible to ensure no delays or setbacks occur. Some need one week’s notice.
  • You’ll be required to pay a connection fee. This varies between providers.
  • You can request an urgent connection but it will incur additional fees.
  • Most energy providers set up your electricity within just three business days. But expect delays sometimes with public holidays.
  • If your home is already connected and you just need to transfer your electricity to the property this can usually be done in one day.
  • If moving into a newly built home make sure your builder has arranged for electricity to be set up.
  • If you’re renting, your landlord or real estate agent may need to arrange a connection. Find out prior to moving.
  • If you have an existing electricity plan & you switch to another provider you may incur an early exit fee.
  • If you’re staying with the same provider your contract usually switches over to your new property however you might be offered a new and sometimes better deal.

Connecting Gas

The process of connecting to gas is similar to electricity in that you contact your gas provider either by phone or online and tell them you need to get connected. But just like with gas please keep in mind the following:

  • If moving home, tell your gas provider as soon as possible to ensure no delays or setbacks occur.
  • Check that your new property has access to natural gas and is set up for a gas connection. If not, you’re looking to pay thousands of dollars to connect to gas.
  • Generally most gas providers will need 3-5 days to set up a new gas connection.
  • If you need a new meter, it could take up to even 10 days to get connected.
  • You’ll be required to pay a connection fee. This varies between providers.
  • If moving into a newly built home make sure your builder has arranged for gas to be set up.
  • If you’re renting, your landlord or real estate agent may need to arrange a connection. Find out prior to moving.
  • If you have an existing gas plan & you switch to another provider you may incur an early exit fee.
