Gas is one of the main power sources for Australian homes and businesses, alongside electricity. Gas can be a cheaper alternative to electricity for appliances such as hot water, ovens and some heaters.

Natural gas can be up to 40% cheaper than electricity, although the cost of natural gas does vary depending on where you live.

If you are environmentally minded, natural gas is also a much cleaner energy source than electricity. Although it is a non-renewable fossil fuel, gas emissions are much lower than electricity, reducing its impact on the environment. In Australia, gas provides around 44% of household energy, but only accounts for 13% of greenhouse gas emissions.

If you are thinking about making the change to gas, call CheapBills today and we will find you the best deal for your home or small business.

ALL YOU WANT TO KNOW ABOUT GAS

Gas is provided to Australian households either through mains gas or in bottles (LPG). The type of gas available in your area will affect your bill and the rates available to you. Reviewing your gas plan and provider every 12 months is a great way to make sure you’re not paying more than you need to. Gas is an expensive utility in Australia, so there are big savings to be made!

There are three steps involved in delivering gas to your home or business. Understanding each step can help you understand the price of your gas bill, and arm you with the knowledge you need to find a better deal.

Step1: Gas production and processing

Gas is a naturally occurring source of fuel that is formed over millions of years when the natural gases produced by the decomposition of plants and animals are trapped in rock formations deep underground.

This gas, mainly consisting of methane, is extracted from its underground reservoirs in the many gas fields in Australia and transported via a network of over 23,000km of underground pipelines to homes and businesses.

After the gas is removed from its underground source, it is processed in processing plants to remove impurities and make it safe for commercial use. It is then converted into various products for sale. The gas we use in our homes and businesses is fed into the grid for distribution.

Natural gas is also used as an ingredient in fertiliser, plastics, pharmaceuticals, fabrics and some chemicals such as ammonia and propane. Its other use is as a heat source in the many manufacturing processes, including glass, bricks, ceramics, paper and food products.

Step 2: Gas distribution

Gas is distributed around Australia through a complex network of high-pressure transmission pipes, totalling over 23,000km. This pipe network, known as ‘the grid’ delivers gas to industrial customers and via gate stations to residential and small business customers.

The gas distributor you use is determined by the area you live in:

  • Victoria
    • Australian Gas Networks (Nationwide)
    • Multinet Gas (Eastern suburbs)
    • AusNet Services (Outer northern and eastern suburbs and eastern Victoria)
  • New South Wales
    • Jemena Gas Networks NSW (Sydney, Newcastle, Central Coast, Wollongong and parts of country NSW)
    • Central Ranges System (Tamworth)
    • Wagga Wagga Gas Distribution Network (Wagga Wagga)
  • Queensland
    • Allgas Energy (South of the Brisbane River, South Coast, Toowoomba & Oakey)
    • Australian Gas Networks (Nationwide)
  • South Australia
    • Australian Gas Networks (Nationwide)
  • Western Australia
    • Public Utilities Office (regulated gas market)
  • ACT
    • EvoEnergy (All of the ACT)
  • Northern Territory
    • Australian Gas Networks (Nationwide)
  • Tasmania
    • Tas Gas Networks (All of TAS)

Step 3: Gas retailers

To buy gas for households or small businesses, you will need to sign up for an energy plan from a gas retailer. The retailer will purchase gas for a wholesale price from a distributor, and pass it on to you for the rate agreed on in your plan.

There are many retailers and gas plans available, so make sure you call CheapBills so we can help you find the best match for your needs.

Why is gas so expensive in Australia?

Several factors contribute to the high cost of gas in Australia. Australian gas fields in recent times haven’t been providing enough gas to meet the demand from domestic and export markets. This impacts the domestic market and drives prices the wholesale price of gas up, which in turn is passed on to consumers. In addition, gas that could have been available domestically is sold to international markets to meet our gas export obligations, further exacerbating the supply-demand shortage.

How can I reduce my gas bill?

There are several ways you can reduce the energy consumption in your home to help conserve gas and save money on your bill:

  • Switch providers – it’s important to compare your gas bill every 12 months to make sure you are getting a good deal. Retailers have discounts and offers for new customers and gas rates vary between providers, so if you don’t regularly compare your gas bill, you might be paying more than you should.
  • Use a gas heater or fireplace – home heating is one of the biggest gas users in your home. Using an energy-efficient gas heater or fireplace rather than central heating can significantly reduce your gas consumption.
  • Turn the heating off while you sleep – once your home is warmed in the evening, you should turn the heating off while you sleep. Switching to thick winter bedding and sleepwear will help you maintain a comfortable temperature without increasing your gas bill.
  • Use solar energy for hot water – producing energy from your own solar panels can save you a lot of money. Your hot water system uses a significant portion of your gas, so switching to solar-powered hot water will help give you the cheap bills you are looking for.
  • Reduce hot water usage – try to be aware of how much hot water you and your family members are using. It is tempting to take a long hot shower, especially in the winter months, but reducing your shower time, even by a few minutes each day, can add up to some big savings.

Compare Electricity and Gas in these States

Our electricity and gas comparison service is only available in states that have a deregulated electricity and gas market. Each energy provider is only able to sell energy in some regions, therefore the number of electricity and gas providers that are compared for you differs depending on where you live. In the rest of Australia, you can only purchase energy from one provider in your region.
Victoria’s households and small businesses enjoy some of the most competitive energy plans compared to other states, following the Victorian government’s deregulation of the market in 2009. With a smorgasbord of retailers competing to provide your gas and electricity, there are some great energy deals out there, if you’re willing to spend the time to find them.
SA
The energy market in New South Wales is extremely competitive, and residents will find a wide array of electricity and gas retailers waiting to meet their needs. The New South Wales government deregulated the gas market in the state on 1st July 2017 in order to make gas prices more competitive. Since that time, consumers have had the option to choose a market or standard offer.
NSW

Residents and small businesses in Queensland have the opportunity to choose their electricity and gas providers from many of Australia’s leading retailers. The gas market was deregulated by the Queensland government in both rural and South-East Queensland in 2007 to encourage competition in the market. By comparing the discounts and offers available, residents and small businesses can make significant savings on their energy bills.

FAQs About Gas

Here are some common questions for customers wanting to switch energy providers and save on bills.

The amount of time it takes to get your gas connection depends on several factors, such as where you live, if you are moving into a new build, if you need a new gas meter and if there is an existing gas connection.

As a guide, most gas providers require 3 -5 days’ notice to set up a new gas connection, or up to 10 days if you need a new gas meter. You can read more about connecting your gas here.

Australia is one of the world’s largest gas exporters, overtaking Qatar in 2020, but being marginally overtaken by the US in 2022. Gas is exported in liquified form (LNG). Australia exports approximately 80 million tonnes of LNG each year. The top three buyers of Australian LNG are Japan, China and Korea.

Russia is the world’s leading exporter of pipeline gas, exporting 197.2 billion cubic meters of pipeline gas in 2020. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 has had a significant impact on the supply of gas from Russia to Europe. In 2022, the US became the leading exporter of LNG, exporting 7 million tonnes in December 2021 alone, in response to the energy crisis in Europe and China.

Gas is measured in multipliers of a joule. On your gas bill, you will see the total cost calculated by MJ per day, which is how many megajoules you have consumed. The units of measurement for gas are:

  • Joule (J) = Basic Unit of Measure
  • Kilojoule (KJ) = 1,000 joules
  • Megajoule (MJ) =100 kilojoules (or 1,000,000 Joules)
  • Gigajoule (GJ) = 1,000,000 megajoules

Your gas bill will most likely be quarterly (every three months), although some providers vary. To suit your financial situation and budget, you can request monthly bills from some gas companies.

If you have bundled your gas and electricity with the same energy provider, your energy bills can be combined to make it easier and simpler for you to keep on top of your finances. Your combined electricity and gas bill will arrive quarterly.

You will see three different charges on your gas bill to make up the total amount you owe to your retailer:

  • Supply charge – the cost per day charged by your distributor for the supply of gas
  • Consumption charge – the cost of the gas you use. This will vary depending on your plan. If you have a flexible plan, you might be paying less for gas at certain times of the day.
  • Rebate – if you live in New South Wales, you might be eligible for the NSW Gas Rebate. This will be applied to each quarterly gas bill, up to a total of $110 per year.

Your gas company will read your meter each billing period to calculate the amount of gas you have consumed. They will do this either by manually reading a basic meter, or digitally accessing information from a smart meter.

If you would like to read your meter yourself from time to time, you can either access the meter box to read the display, which will be shown in MJs. Or, if you have a smart meter installed, your provider will be able to tell you how to access your meter reading, either through an in-home reader, online or via an app.

MIRN stands for Meter Installation Registration Number. This is the unique identifier assigned to your gas meter when it is registered in Australia.

The 11 digit MIRN can be found on your gas bill and your gas meter. It is used by your gas supplier to match your meter to your bill.

Yes, smart meters are available for the gas supplied to your home. You will need to contact your gas supply to talk about your options and arrange for a smart meter to be installed. Smart meters are a great way to monitor your energy usage and save on your gas bill. Your gas provider will provide you with an in-home reader, or advise you on how to access your smart meter online or via an app.

If you have your electricity plan with the same company, you will also be able to track your electricity cost using the same method.

Bottle gas, or LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas), can be either propane or butane. These highly flammable gases are delivered in gas bottles by the retailer and can be used as fuel for cooking, heating and hot water, in the same way as gas from the grid.

The natural gas network does not cover the whole of Australia, so LPG is a great alternative for customers who want to enjoy the benefits of gas but cannot be connected to the grid.

Yes, a gas leak even if small can cause your monthly gas bill to rise rapidly. The most common causes of gas leaks are appliances, lack of ventilation and poor piping, so it’s essential to maintain your system to avoid a leak.

Gas leaks are not only damaging to your gas bill, they can be very harmful to the health and well being of you and your family.

If you suspect a leak you should evacuate the premises straight away and call your gas provider who will advise you of the best next steps. If there is a fire or other emergency, call 000 immediately.

Overall, gas is always cheaper to cook with. Keep in mind that gas ovens are generally slower to heat up and also control heat distribution less than electric ovens. But technology has gotten better over time and now gas ovens perform better than ever. Gas ovens and appliances are generally more expensive to purchase but will save you money in the long term.

Natural gas can be up to 40% cheaper than electricity, although the cost of natural gas does vary depending on where you live.

Gas leaks can be very harmful to the health and well-being of you and your family, and in the worst case can lead to fire and destruction of property. If you suspect a gas leak you should evacuate your home immediately, leaving doors and windows open on the way out to ventilate the area.

Call your gas provider immediately. Most providers have an emergency number you can ring. They will advise you of the next steps to take.

If a fire or another other emergency is taking place, call 000 for help.

The following are all signs of a natural gas leak in your home or building:

  • The smell of rotten eggs
  • Hissing sounds
  • Dead or dying plants
  • Higher than normal gas bills

Your hot water system is one of the biggest users of gas in your home. Using the following best practices will help keep your gas costs down:

  • Use a more efficient water heater: The technology used in water heaters has come a long way in recent years and there are many energy-efficient options available to buy that will see big savings on your gas bill.
  • Use a timer: Set the timer on your hot water system so that you are only heating hot water when you need it, rather than constantly heating and storing hot water. You could reduce the amount of gas you use by up to half by using this simple technique.
  • Turn your water heater down: The recommended temperature for a shower is between 37 and 41 degrees Celsius, so if you’re heating your water any more than this, you’re wasting energy. Every degree of extra heat you add dramatically increases how much energy you use, so it’s definitely worth checking that your hot water system is set to the correct temperature.
  • Install solar panels: The Australian Government offers rebates for installing solar panels in your home which can offset the initial investment. The long term savings will reduce the cost of your hot water system to zero.

Yes, you can! Electricity is the cheapest way to heat your water through renewable energy. This includes electric, solar and heat pump systems.

Yes, there are several types of hot water systems available if you don’t have a gas system:

  • Electric hot water system: heat water with an electric-powered element inside the base of a water tank. They are usually relatively cheap to install but are one of the most expensive ways to heat water in the long term. Make sure you connect your electric hot water system to a controlled-load meter so that you can heat your water during cheaper off-peak periods.
  • Solar hot water system: use solar panels on the roof to generate heat and warm and maintain the temperature of the water. This is the most environmentally friendly way to heat water and the most cost-effective in the long run for most people but can be expensive to set up, even after government rebates.
  • Heat pump hot water system: pump hot air into the system to heat the water. Although the pump is run on electricity, heat pumps are estimated to be three times more energy-efficient than traditional electric hot water systems. However, they are also less reliable and are not suitable for all climates.
