FAQs About Electricity

Here are some common questions for customers wanting to switch electricity providers and save on bills.

CheapBills is a 100% free comparison service. We can take care of switching all your utilities to a better deal in one easy phone call.

We understand that everyone’s needs and budgets are unique, so we can match you with the best plan from one of Australia’s leading energy providers to make sure you’re not spending more than you need to on your electricity and gas.

We will compare the best electricity providers in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and throughout Australia to find the best plan for you. In the same easy phone call, we can also compare NBN, 5G home internet plans, mobile plans  and Pay TV Australia to save you even more on your bills.

If your current energy plan is a fixed-term contract, then it might be better to wait until the end of your benefit period to switch energy providers to avoid paying exit fees.

If you are on a flexible plan with no exit fees, then you have the freedom to switch providers at any time to access a better deal. Remember that there may be connection and disconnection fees payable to your distributor every time you switch, so be sure to do your research to find a plan that suits your home and saves you money.

We recommend that you compare your bills at least every 12 months, as well as if you move house. This is to make sure you have the latest deals and special offers from the best retailer on the market.

Generally, when you sign up with a new energy provider, your benefit period will be 12 months. After that time you will automatically be transferred to a standard plan, which can be hundreds of dollars more each year than a market offer.

By regularly comparing bills, you can be sure you are always getting the best deal.

We take the security of your personal data very seriously. We use the latest security systems to protect your data and we only work with trusted third-party energy and internet providers who adhere to the same high standards.

We collect, handle and use your personal information in accordance with our Privacy Statement. We do not share your data with any third parties for marketing purposes.

If you live in a deregulated energy market region, then you are free to compare energy plans to find the best deal on electricity and gas. We can help you to compare energy in Victoria, New South Wales, South-East Queensland, South Australia, the ACT and Tasmania.

In other areas, your energy is regulated by the government and you will be connected through the appointed supplier.

CheapBills partners with some of Australia’s leading energy providers to bring you the cheapest electricity and gas plans for your home or small business.

We will compare energy plans from our panel of preferred suppliers, including:

  • EnergyAustralia
  • ActewAGL
  • Covau
  • Tango Energy
  • Blue NRG
  • Energy Locals

Our experts will look at all the latest deals on the market to compare rates, tariffs, bundles, discounts, incentives and special offers to find the perfect match for your unique energy needs. Our customers can save up to $400 a year simply by switching to a better plan. You can read more about comparing energy plans here.

Most retailers need between 2-3 business days to arrange a new connection. Urgent connections for moving home electricity can be arranged for the same day, but fees will apply. If you are connecting electricity to a new build, you should allow 10-20 business days for your connection. You can read more about standard connection times here.

Our services to switch electricity and gas are completely FREE. You will need to check with your current provider to see if you have any outstanding bills or exit fees. Your retailer may also pass on a connection or disconnection fee from the distributor. Find out about these fees here.

Yes, there will be a fee payable to your distributor if you require an urgent power connection. The cost varies between distributors – give us a call on 1300 786 045 to discuss your options for an urgent connection.

Nowadays, many retailers offer “next business day” or even “same business say” connections as standard, to help you avoid urgent connection fees. Read more about the normal time to connect power to your new home here.

No, your poles and pipes do not need to be changed to switch retailers. The poles and pipes are owned by your electricity distributor, not your retailer. When you change to a new retailer, they will simply take over the distributor’s network fees to access the poles and pipes for your power supply. These charges are passed on to you on your bill. Read more about electricity distributors in Australia here.

You should inform your energy provider if you need to run life support or other essential medical devices in your home. They will register your device to make sure your power is never disconnected without an agreed amount of notice.
