FAQs About the NBN

Here are some common questions for customers wanting to switch NBN providers and save on bills.

CheapBills is a 100% free comparison service. We can take care of switching all your utilities to a better deal in one easy phone call.

We understand that everyone’s needs and budgets are unique, so we can match you with the best plan from one of Australia’s leading NBN providers to make sure you’re not spending more than you need to.

We will compare the best NBN providers in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and throughout Australia to find the right plan for you. In the same easy phone call, we can also compare electricity, gas and Pay TV Australia to save you more on your bills.

We recommend that you compare your bills at least every 12 months, as well as if you move house. This is to make sure you have the latest deals and special offers from the best retailer on the market.

NBN providers often offer cheap internet plans or discounts to new customers, so by regularly comparing bills, you can be sure you are always getting the best deal.

We take the security of your personal data very seriously. We use the latest security systems to protect your data and we only work with trusted third-party energy and internet providers who adhere to the same high standards.

We collect, handle and use your personal information in accordance with our Privacy Statement. We do not share your data with any third parties for marketing purposes.

At CheapBills, we pride ourselves on offering only the best quality internet plans. That’s why we’ve partnered with some of Australia’s leading internet providers to compare NBN plans for our customers.

  • Optus
  • TPG
  • Foxtel
  • Tangerine
  • More Telecom
  • Aussie Broadband

All of our recommended plans come with unlimited data, so you don’t need to worry about tracking your usage or being charged an over-limit fee.

If you are a particularly light internet user, talk to us about switching to a capped-data plan, which could save you money on your internet plan compared to an unlimited option.

To help you decide, the amount of data used per hour for some common internet activities is below:

  • Streaming services for movies and shows – approx 1GB per hour (up to 7 GB per hour for 4K)
  • Music streaming services – approx 120 MB per hour
  • Working from home – up to 20 GB per file download
  • Social Media – approx 180 MB per hour
  • Voice and Video calls – approx 36 MB per hour

It’s important to choose an NBN plan that suits your needs – talk to a CheapBills expert who can help you decide which option is right for you.

A contract often includes perks such as a $0 activation or a modem, whereas a month-to-month option allows you to upgrade, downgrade or cancel at any time without incurring fees.

If you are connecting to the NBN for the first time, then you will probably need a new modem, as older-style ADSL/ADSL2+ modems are not compatible with the high speeds of the NBN.

If you are switching NBN providers from an existing NBN connection, you may be able to save money by using your existing modem. Make sure you check with CheapBills or your new internet provider to see if the make and model of your current modem is compatible with your new plan.

5G can be a great alternative to the NBN for high-speed home internet, if the NBN isn’t available in your area. 5G is a new technology and so currently has limited coverage from select retailers.

Talk to a CheapBills expert or read more here to learn more about 5G vs NBN.

There are several different types of connections that deliver NBN to Australian homes. The type of connection you have will affect the speed and plan you can choose. Three of the most common are

  • Fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) – uses high-speed fibre optic cables to a node. Copper cables are then used to deliver the NBN from the node to the home.
  • Fibre-to-the-curb (FTTC) – uses high-speed fibre optic cables to the node, and from the node to the curbside. Copper cables are then used to deliver the NBN from the curb to the home
  • Fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) – uses high-speed fibre optic cables to the utility box on the side of the home. FTTP is capable of delivering slightly higher speeds than fibre-to-the-node or fibre-to-the-curb NBN connections.

Other types of connections available are:

  • Fibre to the building (FTTB)
  • Hybrid fibre-Coaxial (HFC cable)
  • Fixed wireless
  • Satellite connection

No, unfortunately, you cannot choose whether your home is fitted with an FTTN, FTTC or FTTP. The type of NBN connection you have depends on the area you live in, and was determined by the government’s NBN roll-out plan.

Currently, the Fibre Connect Program is underway. This will see approximately 2 million homes upgraded from FTTC or FTTN connections to a faster FTTP connection. Talk to a CheapBills expert to find out if your home is eligible for the free Fibre Connect Program.

If you are connecting your home to the NBN for the first time, you will need an NBN technician to complete the installation. Your CheapBills expert will arrange this for you as part of our comparison service.

If you have previously had an active NBN connection, you may be able to self-install, but it’s important to talk to your new internet provider or CheapBills expert to make sure, as every home is different.

You can read more about connecting to the NBN here.

Once you have decided on your NBN provider, you will receive a confirmation email from them, followed by a booking for either a tech appointment or connection date, depending on the infrastructure already in place at your home.

Your new modem will be delivered before your appointment date.

If you need new tech installed, you can prepare for your appointment by:

  • Making sure someone is home for the appointment
  • Contacting your landlord for permission if you are renting
  • Considering where you would like the NBN boxes to be placed

At the appointment, a technician will install a utility box on an outside wall of your home and a connection box inside of your home. You will then need to connect your modem to the connection box to complete the set-up. Make sure you carefully follow the instructions from your new internet provider every step of the way.
