Who owns Alinta Energy?

Alinta Energy is owned by Chow Tai Fook Capital Limited, a Hong Kong investment company. They have head offices in Sydney and service both the Australian and New Zealand energy markets.

They were formed under the State Energy Commission of Western Australia but were dissolved in 1995 into separate gas and electricity groups, including Alinta Gas. Alinta Gas then became Alinta Limited, before changing to its current name, Alinta Energy.

Chow Tai Fook Capital acquired the company in 2017 and it remains a subsidiary of the enterprise today.

Is Alinta a sustainable energy company?

Alinta Energy is committed to delivering lower-emissions energy that is reliable and affordable, taking into account social, environmental and economic factors. They have a 2025 target to support the development of 1,500MW of renewable energy generation and energy storage capacity. 

Other notable sustainability achievements include a 35MW Battery Storage Project in the Newman gas-fired power station in the Pilbara that supplies consistent power to iron ore mining operations, the Chichester Solar Gas Hybrid project and the purchase of renewable energy from solar and wind farms across Australia.

Alinta is one of Australia’s largest power generators, producing energy at 10 sites across Australia and New Zealand that are either contracted, owned and/or operated by the company.

  • Wagerup, Western Australia – a dual fuel (gas and distillate) power station that provides electricity to the South West Interconnected System (SWIS). 
  • Pinjarra, Western Australia – a gas power station producing both electricity and steam to power the (SWIS) and Alcoa refineries respectively.
  • Goldfields Gas Pipeline, Western Australia – a 1,380km gas pipeline transporting natural gas from Carnarvon basin producers in the North-West of WA to Kalgoorlie in the South-East of WA.
  • Newman Power Station, Western Australia – a dual fuel (gas and distillate) power station including a Battery Storage System.
    • Port Hedland Power Station – a dual fuel (gas and distillate) power station located in the Pilbara region of WA. Its five 42MW gas-fired turbine units are located in two separate locations, at the Boodarie Power Station and the Port Hedland Power Station. 
    • Braemar, Queensland – an open-cycle gas turbine plant providing both peak and intermediate power.
  • Bairnsdale, Victoria – a gas-fired power station supplying energy to Victoria’s East Gippsland region.
  • Reeves Plain Power Station Proposal – a proposal for the development and construction of a 300MW gas-fired power station in South Australia has been approved.
  • Glenbrook, New Zealand – a co-generation plant that is fully integrated into the New Zealand Steel plant, supplying around 60% of the plant’s electricity requirements.
  • Loy Yang B Power station – located in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley, this coal-fired power station is scheduled to close in 2035.
